Hey, I’m Ngoc. I’m Vietnamese, and I have a boyfriend.
I realized I was gay when I was about 5 or 6…pretty young.
I had a best friend in Vietnam, and we used to play together.
It was one of the fondest moments of my life.
I didn’t realize that was something I wasn’t ‘supposed to’ do, until I came to America in ’91,when I was 7. That’s when I started noticing it was different, to be liking someone of the same gender.
When I came out, I think I came out to myself first. It wasn’t until high school when I told one of my best girlfriends, that I liked boys.
It was so nerve-wracking that I had to do it over the phone. I cried.
And, her response was… “You’re gay?! You’re gay!?”
It felt like the longest 2 seconds of my life when she said,
“You’re gay?! You’re gay!?”
I’m pretty open with my whole family actually.
It’s just something where I took the initiative of telling and, not hiding from them.
So, everyone in my family knows… everyone close to my family knows.
